Acrylic on Clay
My acrylic paintings on clay are drawn and painted just as paintings are done on canvas or paper. Most of my art on clay is inspired by images of people from the Omo Valley region of South Ethiopia.* I became fascinated with their custom of using things from nature to adorn their hair and/or their bodies. When my art work is finished, the clay is fired. However, unlike any other medium used for creating a painting, one can not be sure how the work will look until it is fired. The artist must have a keen eye for detail in order to determine what the firing process might or might not reveal. Even then, the fire has the last word. Once fired, the painting becomes an original that cannot be recreated exactly the same, even if I do another painting with the same image. Each painting is hand-signed on the back of the art work.
A few of my customers have become collectors, owning three or more originals. I prefer that customers who purchase original paintings be the first to acquire the respective new image. After an original is sold, I then consider using a copy of the image on other art forms. Examples include, clay tiles, note cards, giclee prints, etc.
